Background & History

The Haganah (Hebrew: 'The Defense') was the main Zionist paramilitary organization operating in Mandatory Palestine from 1920 to 1948. It served as the precursor to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Mossad. The Haganah's intelligence wing, the Sherut Yediot (SHAI), evolved into what became Israel's military intelligence and security services. The organization coordinated with American Jewish networks including the Sonneborn Institute to procure weapons and raise funds.
